Now that Peter Cammarano will be sworn in as mayor on July 1, he will have to face a nine-member council that includes three new members who ran with his opponent, Dawn Zimmer. In addition, Zimmer herself gets to remain on the council for another two years, since she is a ward councilperson rather than at-large and will be up for re-election with the other five ward councilpeople in 2011.
Some people have predicted that Zimmer, with her strong showing in the mayor's race, will be chosen as the next council president on July 1. While the council and mayor do not need to be at odds over everything, Zimmer and Cammarano are likely to be at odds over the desirability and size of certain redevelopment plans in Hoboken. The council and the Planning Board must vote on redevelopment plans.
While council meetings tend to slow down during the summer, the new makeup of the council will keep things interesting.
Also remaining on the council: Theresa Castellano, her cousin Michael Russo, former mayoral candidate Beth Mason, Zimmer ally Peter Cunningham, and the sometimes administration-friendly Angelo Giacci.
Who do you think will be sworn in as council prez on July 1? And what will happen because of the new council makeup?
